Gear Up and Accelerate Your Global Connection

Oh no! Is your internet down again? Until now, the telecom sector has been generally optimistic that internet infrastructure would be able to keep up with demand for connectivity.

Ever since the COVID-19 pandemic started though, the global internet network has been encountering severe traffic issues as people have shifted to remote working and digital entertainment in an effort to avoid personal contact. Just as too many cars on the road create traffic jams, the flood of data on the internet is jamming of the internet at times.

This surge in traffic is literally creating a “traffic jam” on the internet which has slowed down some applications, especially at peak times. Netflix and YouTube even went so far as to downgrade their video-streaming quality in Europe to reduce the strain on networks.

Fortunately, telco companies including Telin are continuously adding connectivity and capacity, while finding ways to tweak existing infrastructure to become more efficient.

Investing in Submarine Cable Networks

The Submarine Cable System Market report upholds the future market predictions related to Submarine Cable System market size, revenue, and production. The Asia Pacific submarine cable systems market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 9.8% over the forecast period 2018-2027. Starting in 2017, Telin invested in a major expansion of its submarine cable networks. This is important as more than 99% of all transoceanic data is carried by undersea cables.

As of today, the Telin Internet Global Network (TIXNet) comprises 207,300 kilometers of submarine cable and 59 Points of Presence in 28 countries, enabling Telin to deliver high SLA for 99.5% or more for every type of business starting from SME to Large Enterprise and Carriers.

Specifically, Telin owns and operates the Indonesia Global Gateway (IGG) backbone connecting Manado-Dumai, Indonesia, which serves as a hub connecting the United States (SEA-US) and the Southeast Asia – Middle East – Western Europe 5 (SEA-ME-WE5) cables. Thus, Telin offers the only route connecting the USA to Asia that does not go through the disruption prone area of South China Sea, Luzon Strait and Japan, where cables frequently experience cutting and breakage.

Increasing Connectivity to Southeast Asia

Home to around 670 million people, Southeast Asia is expected to outperform global markets, becoming the world's fourth-largest economic bloc in the next decade. As such, businesses should consider establishing a strong foothold in this area in order to tap future growth.

Telin’s submarine cable network will play a major role in supporting connectivity for the region as it places Southeast Asia at the centre of its cable systems, thus emphasizing the region’s importance in this integrated global communications network and also improving the region’s connection with the rest of the world. For customers based in Southeast Asia or who have substantial interests in the region, using Telin’s network can be significantly advantageous in terms of achieving lower latency and higher reliability.

Currently, users of Telin’s SEA-US network are able to experience the lowest time delay compared to the existing route, as it only requires three hops to connect from Singapore to the US. Moreover, the SEA-US route directly connects with countries in Western Europe, Middle East, and Central Asia through the Indonesia Global Gateway (IGG) and then to the Western Europe, Middle East and Southeast Asia (SEA-ME-WE5) cabling route.

Future Growth

Not resting on its laurels, Telin is currently developing a new cable route, the Southeast Asia–Japan 2 (SJC2), which will be ready by 2021. The SJC2 spans 10,500km, connecting 11 cable landing stations in Singapore, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Hong Kong, Taiwan, mainland China, Korea and Japan, with the Singapore – Hong Kong route of this cable service owned by Telin. The cable features eight fibre pairs, at least 18Tbps of capacity per fiber pair, with initial design capacity of 144 Tbps, which will boost traffic capacity yet further in Southeast Asia.
