Why ASEAN can be the fastest growing market? Telin’s CEO bares it all

Jakarta, 2 December 2021 - Capacity Media once again hosted its annual meeting for Asia-Pacific carriers, content and cloud communities from Tuesday, November 30th until Thursday, December 2nd 2021, this time in a virtual format. Telin CEO, Budi Satria Dharma Putra represented Telin as the keynote speaker. Budi spoke on the “ASEAN Growth” panel alongside Executive Director from Asia Cloud Computing Association, Lim May Ann, Senior Manager, Enterprise Strategic Business Development from PLDT Enterprise, Orvin Reyes, Chief Business Development Officer from IX Telecom, Taufiq Hussien, and Group Head Wholesale from Axiata, Obaid Rahman. This event was moderated by Singapore Chapter Lead from iMasons, Joshua Au. The panel focused on  how operators are serving the needs of the customers across the ASEAN region amidst growing interest and demand.

Budi explained that the Indonesian Digital Economy is projected  to reach US$133 Billion, with digital transaction growth of 33% and cloud adoption of 77% driving data center demand and growth. “A lot of hyperscalers or digital players come to Indonesia to build data centers, such as Amazon, Microsoft, and others. Telkom also sees this as an opportunity to build a hyperscale data center. The role of each data center is important, especially as when we are going to adapt 5G technology.”

He also shared that growth of data centers needs to be supported by connectivity, therefore, Telkom Group has been continuously investing in subsea cables to connect cities all over Indonesia. In addition, Telin is participating in the Bifrost subsea cable consortium.

In the discussion, May Ann shared that Covid-19 has driven demand and gained momentum but not all infrastructure has been able to meet the demand for data during the pandemic.

Taufiq added that Internet user growth has been huge with 60 million new internet users according to Google`, thus, they’re working with Telcos to cope with the enormous rise in in bandwidth. At the end of the year, Malaysia is switching from 3G to 4G and 5G.

Orvin from PLDT Enterprise said in his session, “PLDT obviously has prospects [to take on a greater role] as the Philippine and the Asian digital economy role push forward towards stronger recovery. We announce that we will be building our first hyperscale data center, which also be the first of its kind in the country to have more capacity in one facility, [and] is designed to be world-class when it comes energy efficiency, reliability, and of course, redundancy.”

Subsequently, Obaid said that although it was good to hear from all the panellists about the investment, he pointed out that the need for investment in digital infrastructure is not limited to just data centers and subsea cables, but also includes the value chain. In this area, Axiata Group has been instrumental in connecting those who are unconnected.
