Singapore, 12 December 2023 – With technology developing at an unprecedented rate, the Asia-Pacific (APAC) subsea cable landscape has a lot of potential and intriguing developments ahead of it. Already an essential part of the global digital economy, the APAC subsea cable network is about to undergo major change. The boundaries of subsea connectivity are about to change due to a number of causes, including geopolitical concerns and evolving technology, which will present both new opportunities and difficulties. Given this ever-evolving scenario, it is imperative to conduct an optimistic exploration in order to predict the upcoming transformation of the APAC subsea cable market.
Industry leaders and experts gathered at the much awaited Capacity Asia 2023 event to discuss the future prospects of the APAC subsea cable market. The insightful discussion, which was held on December 12, 2023, at Shangri-La Hotel, Singapore served as a focal point for examining the direction of subsea cable developments over the next ten years. The key subject on the agenda was, "What will the APAC subsea cable look like in 10 years?" Showcasing eminent speakers who offered their perspectives, tactics, and predictions for the changing subsea cable landscape, the event attracted interest from more than 1000 attendees. Telin's distinguished CEO, Budi Satria Dharma Purba, was one of the panelists who contributed to this discussion. He offered his experience to the panel and provided a distinct viewpoint on the future of subsea cable connectivity in APAC.
Budi discussed how and where traffic could be better distributed while meeting demand as one of the highlights. Although Singapore remains a popular destination, the area is seeing an increase in the amount of new cable development. This is caused by the geopolitical tension to avoid the South China Sea. Not to mention, there’s also congestion in the Malacca Strait therefore, there’s discussion to accentuate the next Hub in Asia.
Nowadays, the biggest traffic concentration is Asia Pacific (shifting from US & Europe) indicating a projected CAGR of 10-25% in Data Centre capacity across Malaysia, Indonesia and India over the next five years. At present, there are 38 Submarine Cable in Singapore Hubs, placing Singapore as the most crowded Hubs in the world, comparing to Egypt, Marseille and Tokyo.
Budi feels that implementing this alternative will help with the current issue with APAC subsea cable traffic, "Instead of having the Hub on the land, we’ll have the Hub in the sea. The Indonesia water will be critical to distribute all these traffic to support Data Centre capacity. So Telin supports this to provide better performance through the fat-system. We initiated 7 (seven) new subsea system which we call ICE (Indonesia Cable Express) to make Indonesia the Hub for subsea system.”, he added.
The ICE (Indonesian Cable Express) Cable is now developing a large-scale cable network that connects Indonesia, Japan, India, and several other Southeast Asian countries. To avoid increasing congestion in subsea cable traffic across Asia-Pacific routes, APAC may require a comprehensive plan in the future. Not only is strategic planning required to enable the growth of subsea cable that aligns with demand seamlessly, but it is also required to relieve congestion. Telin is constantly involved in the development of technologies and expansion to better ensure the future of APAC subsea cable.
The next day, on 13th December 2023, Telin SVP Group Strategy, Sales & Enablement, John Tolton also took part as one of the panelist on “A2P Messaging's Strategic Growth Opportunity” session. As the telecommunications industry converges on Capacity Asia 2023, industry leaders, experts, and innovators are gearing up to delve into the strategic growth opportunities within the A2P (Application-to-Person) messaging landscape. The event, renowned for its spotlight on the latest trends and advancements in the telecommunications sector, is set to feature a dedicated session on the transformative potential of A2P messaging.
The session on "A2P Messaging's Strategic Growth Opportunity" cover a range of crucial topics such as, An in-depth analysis of the current state of the A2P messaging market, including user behavior, demand patterns, and regional variations, Exploration of cutting-edge technologies influencing A2P messaging, such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, and blockchain, Insights into effective strategies for businesses to leverage A2P messaging for customer engagement, marketing, and revenue generation, and a discussion on compliance challenges and opportunities in the evolving regulatory environment, emphasizing the importance of data privacy and security.
John stated, “There's going to be more and more ways in which you communicate with them. A2P is one way in which messages are being carried to them. I think that the fundamental value of A2P for the purpose of authentication is something that is there and will stay for a long period of time. We need to work closely with those brands that are doing the marketing. If we can still do some of that on A2P, depending on what the actual need of the brand is, then we can do that. But I think we should also be opening up to other channels as well.”
A2P messaging has emerged as a critical communication channel for businesses, enabling seamless interaction with customers through applications. The strategic growth opportunities in this space are vast, with the potential to redefine customer engagement strategies and drive business success.
