Batam, 21 December 2022 – PT Telkom Indonesia (Persero) Tbk (Telkom) officially inaugurated construction of the Hyperscale Data Center (HDC) Batam in a groundbreaking ceremony at Kabil Industrial Estate on Wednesday, December 21st, 2022.
This HDC, with a total capacity of 51 MegaWatts (MW), will be the second largest data center owned by Telkom, and will be managed by NeutraDC, a subsidiary of Telkom. NeutraDC presently manages four other data centers, including the Cikarang Hyperscale Data Center and Sentul, Serpong, Surabaya Data Center.
To ensure connectivity, the HDC will be supported by fiber optic cables provided by PT Telekomunikasi Indonesia International (Telin), another subsidiary of Telkom which focuses on international telecommunication business.
The ground-breaking ceremony was witnessed by Vice Minister II of the Ministry of State-Owned Enterprises of the Republic of Indonesia, Kartika Wirjoatmodjo, together with Telkom's CEO Ririek Adriansyah, Telkom's Director of Wholesale & International Service Bogi Witjaksono, Telin’s CEO Budi Satria Dharma Purba, NeutraDC’s CEO Andreuw Th. A. F. and Telkom’s senior leadership.
The HDC Batam will strengthen Telkom’s position as a major regional player in the data center business. Besides helping to handle the surge in Indonesia’s digital traffic resulting from the acceleration of electronic transactions, systems, and digital content during the global pandemic, HDC Batam is also placed to capture spillover from other countries.
Through Telin’s submarine cable network, HDC Batam will be connected to multiple submarine cable systems such as the Batam Singapore Cable System (BSCS) and the Indonesia Global Gateway (IGG). Telin also operates the 15,000 kilometer South East Asia-United States (SEA-US) submarine cable system which provides an alternate route away from the earthquake prone areas of East Asia, with a cable that runs from Manado, Indonesia to Philippines, Guam, Hawaii, and the United States.
In Indonesia, the SEA-US links up with the IGG to pass through Batam and Singapore, thus creating a stable, high-speed connection between South East Asia and North America.
On July 20th, 2022, Telin launched the second International Gateway in Manado, North Sulawesi. The Manado International Gateway will further accelerate digital connectivity throughout Indonesia. In addition, the quality of telecommunications and digital services to and from Indonesia will become increasingly reliable.
Going forward, Telin, Keppel and Facebook are jointly developing the 15,000 km Bifrost Cable System, which will be the largest capacity high-speed transmission cable running across the Pacific Ocean with direct connection from Singapore via Indonesia to the west coast of North America. On schedule for completion by 2024, Bifrost will support massive internet demand growth to and from Indonesia, and contribute to national digital economic growth.
These initiatives prove Telin’s commitment to continuously transforming the digital infrastructures in the country to accelerate national digital sovereignty.
